Latin translation?

what does the latin phrase "ad astra per aspera" mean?

im not sure i have written ti correctly thoughLatin translation?
it means "to the stars through difficulties" which I take to mean to aim high in your goals and ambitions regardless of the difficulties you encounterLatin translation?
TO THE STARS THROUGH DIFFICULTIESLatin translation?
Literally: to the stars through sharp things /thorns (ie hardships).

The RAF have a similar motto: Per ardua ad astra, with a similar meaning.

I liked the version in my Latin book years ago: "To the stars through bolts and bars". The fact I can still remember it shows how striking it was!
